The Gentle Chair and Strength and Balance Classes are for people who want to improve their mobility, strength and balance.   You do not need to be referred, just come along. Wear something loose and comfortable that allows you to move easily.

The exercise session starts and ends with seated exercise with time for a cup of tea/coffee and a chat afterwards. Some standing exercises are conducted during the session, but there are optional seated alternatives.

The classes are designed for people who either have fallen or are at risk of falling but are also suitable for people who prefer a gentle approach to exercise or for people with chronic conditions (e.g. respiratory problems, arthritis, osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, mild angina) degenerative diseases e.g. multiple-sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, or for those wanting to get back to health following surgery (e.g. hip or knee replacement).

The Thursday morning Strength and Balance Class at Rowlands Castle is a more challenging class with a greater range of standing exercises to improve balance.

The cost of the class is £4 and can be paid on a pay-as-you-go basis or as a block in advance. (Sorry – I am unable to make refunds for classes missed). A block is usually 6-8 weeks at a time and this includes a free class if you pay in advance.   You do not have to pay for classes missed if you know at the time of paying that you will be away (e.g. holiday) - you need to pay for at least 4 classes to get your free class.

You may attend any of the sessions listed.     View Timetable

One of the most important aspects of the Gentle Chair and Strength and Balance Classes is the Social side.  We always have plenty of willing volunteers who provide tea and coffee afterwards.

And there is always time for a chat and the opportunity to make new friends afterwards.

Did you know?...

That you increase your risk of falling if:

  • you take prescibed drugs (particularly sleeping tablets) or if you are a heavy drinker
  • you are over 50 and inactive - age related changes in mobility can contribute to a fall
  • you have a medical condition e.g. Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Stroke
  • your living environment is not ideal - e.g. cold, poorly lit, obstacles on the floor

By attending an appropriate exercise class which improves mobility, strength and balance you can considerably reduce your risk of having a fall and the associated difficulties which go with it e.g. hospitalisation, hip replacement.

Falls can also cause people to lose confidence when out and about and this often leads to the person preferring to stay indoors and gradually become lonely and isolated.

The Gentle Chair and Strength and Balance classes will help to improve mobility, strength and balance whatever your health condition or fitness level.  Whilst they may not remove the risk of a fall completely, your reaction time will be quicker as you will be fitter and this may avert a serious injury (e.g. hip fracture).  The classes also provide an opportunity to make friends and socialise.
