Cycling in the Lakes
(March 2010)
The extremely snowy weather we have had so far this year has provided some beautiful landscapes in the Lake District. The fantastic weather we have had this week has also provided some lovely sunny scenes (though cold!).
This off road cycle path is the NCN (National Cycle Network) Route 71. We cycled the stretch along an old disused Railway Track which had been converted to an off road cycle and walk way between Keswick and Threlkeld.
Even though the Lake District is mountainous there are plenty of flatish areas in the valleys where it is possible to enjoy cycling without it being too physically taxing. These pictures only give a flavour of the scenery that can be enjoyed.

Keswick to Threlkeld
National Cycle Network Route 71
Near the start of the ride is a winding board walk created on stilts to connect the old railway track where the A66 cuts across it.
|
The old railway track crossed many bridges and passed through many tunnels - this adds to the interest of the cycle route. |
|
|
The route offers beautiful views of the rivers and mountains in the Lake District such as Blencathra to the north .... |
and the White Pike of Clough Head to the south. |
|
|
The route is marked by signposts created out of the iron from the railway. |
There are many places to stop and enjoy the local hospitality along the way.
Threlkeld has a mining museum and narrow guage railway which are tourist attractions for visitors to the area.
